All About Oils

If you've been following along, you should be tired of me mentioning the word moisturize.  I keep saying it because it is so important.  I didn't understand that in the beginning but the more I read and played with my hair, I began to understand that my hair craves moisture especially in the winter.  Now I wasn't big on oils at first because I hate oily hair with a passion.  I can't stand for my hair to be weighed down with oil and other hair products.  It leaves the surfaces oily and my hair will not respond to any hair style.  When I would hear the word oil, I just think, "Nope, that's not for me."
But thankfully a few companies have oils that are not heavy and that can be used daily.  Now just because they aren't heavy does not mean pour the entire bottle in your hair daily.  At that rate, I am sure your hair will become an oily and unresponsive mess that will need to be washed immediately.

Below are a list of my favorite oils.  I use one of these oils after I put in my leave-in conditioner (part of the LOC method which I'll talk more about in my next post), 2-3 times a week if my scalp becomes dry, or whenever I re-style my hair.  These oils can also be used with hot oil treatments, which is something I don't do but there are tons of people whose hair benefits from them.
  • Righteous Roots Hair RX - I recently saw this oil on quite a few of the natural hair pages that I follow on Instagram.  At first, I was thinking that this was something that only a few people were trying but then I saw more and more of this product so my need to try something new kicked in.  I must say that I really like it but this is one of those oils that you have to use a little bit of because it can be heavy.  It's packed with 100% pure black Jamaican castor oil (helps to retain growth), organic virgin coconut oil (reduces frizz), and argan oil (increases shine).  It also contains sesame oil, tea tree oils, jojoba, and other natural organic oils.
  • Mielle Organics Mint Almond Oil - This is one of my favorites!  It's really lightweight and can be used daily.  It helps to reduce breakage, dry scalp, and shedding.  I apply it to my scalp as well as to my hair before I style it.   When I blow dried my hair straight a few months ago I used this as a heat protectant.  Almond oil is a carrier protein that seals and locks in moisture.  It also has a minty smell too it, which I like especially when I can smell it throughout the night.
  • The Mane Choice Multi-Vitamin Scalp Nourishing Growth Oil - This oil replaced the Wild Hair Growth Oil that I was using.  The growth oil is lightweight and can be used daily.  It is a stimulating hair growth oil the penetrates deeply into the scalp.  I usually apply the oil to my scalp throughout the week as needed.
  • The Mane Choice Ancient Egyptian Anti-Breakage & Repair Antidote Oil - This in combination with the growth oil listed above is a force to be reckoned with.  This oil repairs, strengthens, and adds shine to the hair.  This oil smells amazing!  Actually the entire Ancient Egyptian collection smells soooooooooo good!  I'm a sucker for a good smelling hair product.  It's a lightweight oil so it can be used daily if needed.  I usually apply it whenever I use this entire collection during wash day.  I will also use it throughout the week as I re-style my hair.

  •  Briogeo Rosarco Oil - This oil is said to be great for sealing split ends and restoring dry, brittle hair.  I purchased it because it is 98% naturally-derived and it is gluten and cruelty-free.  It is also vegan.  I've already read that it is a great heat protectant so it's great to use when blow drying or styling your hair with a heated tool.  I have not used this product yet.  But I will give it a try during wash day this week I think.  I'll update as soon as I've used it a few times.
  • tgin Argan Replenishing Hair & Body Serum - OMG, I originally left this off and I was looking under my cabinet and saw it.  This serum is bomb.com!  It's made with argan, coconut, jojoba, and Vitamin E oils.  I pour a little in my hands and use it to separate my curls or twists. It's light and non-greasy so it can be used daily and it NEVER leaves my hair feeling oily.  My hair is always soft when I use this.

What are some of your favorite oils and how do you use them?  Next up, moisturizers!
