The Next Journey

Not only was I about to become someone's mom, which was mind blowing, I had to find new hair products because the smell of my new favorites made me sick to my stomach.  You might be wondering, "Why in the hell won't she just get a sew-in or some braids?"  I was on a mission.  My goal was to make this natural hair thing work for me.  I started reading labels to see what was in the stuff that I was buying.  Like really, who reads the labels on products? *raises hand* ME!  I will stand in the middle of the aisle and read the entire label or I will look online.
I started looking for products that were sulfate free, paraben free, not tested on animals, didn't contain certain alcohols, etc.  I'll discuss all that in more detail in a later post.

Anyway, I came back to Carol's Daughter products.  They had a new line that had just came out called Hair Milk.  It was supposed to be more nourishing and conditioning to curly hair.  I was in Target one day and decided to pick some up.  I bought the Hair Milk Refresher Spray and the Hair Milk Nourishing & Conditioning Styling Pudding.  Let me tell ya'll...this combination was everything!  It didn't leave my hair oily or heavy and it stayed conditioned for several days.  And finally I was able to produce a decent looking twist out.  What I really think helped the twist out was that I decided to chop off the last of my straight hair.  At this point, there was only about a half of an inch left.  One night after washing my hair I was looking in the mirror and just said, "To hell with these ends."  I didn't think it would make that much of a difference but it made ALL the difference in the world.  The very next day I started getting compliments on how soft my hair looked (and it was) and how nice my curls looked.  So now I'm thinking, "Well damn.  I been walking around for over five months with my hair looking a hot ass mess then."  But you live and you learn and baby I learned.  Even my husband was commenting more on my hair.  I asked him, "So basically my hair been ugly all these months and you didn't say anything?!"  Of course he was like, "Nah baby.  It's just that it looks different now.  Like a good different."  *rolls eyes*  I let him have it though.  I'm sure if I  ask him about this conversation he won't even remember it.  I still love him though.

Me being me, I couldn't just be happy using one product line.  I had to try something else or add something else to my routine.  It was just so many products out there.  I then ran across the Curls brand.  I ordered the Champagne & Caviar Curl ElixirCrème Brule Whipped CURL CreamPassion Fruit CURL Control PasteBlueberry Bliss Twist N Shout Cream, and Blueberry Bliss CURL Control Jelly.  Now when I originally ordered the Blueberry Bliss line was not out yet.  I ordered that a few months later.  I used the control paste daily.  I used it on my edges whenever I wore a curly puff, mohawk, or put my headbands on.  I used this product for awhile.  The only reason I really stopped using it was because I found another product that I liked a little more.  I really didn't give the curl elixir and the curl cream a fair chance.  Like they were okay.  I don't think I used them more than a few times.  They just didn't seem to do much for my hair texture, which by the way my hair type is both a 4a and 4b.  Once the Blueberry Bliss cream and curl control came out I used those whenever I didn't use my Carol's Daughter products.  I used these products mainly to do twist outs and it would provide a good hold for my hair.  I wouldn't have to re-twist my hair every night, which was good because as I got further into my pregnancy being on my feet long caused me to have swollen feet.  Such a fun time in my life said no one ever.  But I'll gladly do it all over again.  I was content with all of these products until I started searching on Instagram and following different natural hair pages.  My bank account hated what I found but I was on a roll with these hair products.

In my last post I forgot to mention that humidity is the devil to natural hair.  At least to my hair anyway.  I've lived in the south all my life.  I was born in Florida but raised in Georgia.  The summers were hot as hell and the winters were really mild.  So being in Iowa during the winter was a complete change for me.  When I went home to visit during the warmer months and when we went on vacation I could not figure out why in the hell my hair would not do right.  It would be so cute and curly in the house and within 30 minutes of being outside it turns into a ball of cotton.  Not a curl in sight.  Humidity.  That damn humidity.  Humidity is higher in the south than it is out in the midwest.  Even on a hot day in Iowa my hair would last almost the entire day if I didn't sweat.  Now back home in the winter months, my hair wouldn't be so dry.  During the winter months in Iowa, my hair craved moisture and that's when I learned that I needed a good deep conditioner and daily moisturizer.

Stay tuned because I have even more products to add to the list!
