Back to this Hair...

Ok, so I'm back for another round.  In my last post, I started discussing the start of my transition.  Later in this post and the posts to follow, I'll discuss more in depth the products that I have used and currently use and how they work or didn't work for me.

Now about this white film from the Shea Moisture Hair Smoothie--I found that any product that I used that left a white film on my hair would NEVER work for me.  I don't care how clean my hair was, it just doesn't work.  So I had to start researching some hair products ASAP because as a professional I couldn't go to work with my hair just any kind of way.  So I came across the brands As I Am, Miss Jessie's, and Carol's Daughter.

Now Carol's Daughter was a brand that had been around and I had heard of them before.  My mom actually used quite a few of their products so I decided to try the Monoi Repairing Shampoo and the Monoi Repairing Conditioner.  I loved this combination.  It really helped to strengthen my hair.  Transitioning from chemical treated hair to natural hair can put a lot of stress on your hair.  It can cause it to be dull, dry, brittle, and break.  The shampoo cleaned my hair but didn't give it a squeaky clean feeling, which was good for me.  The conditioner added moisture to my hair and that was a huge plus.  But washing and conditioning my hair was the easy part.  How in the hell was I going to style it?

While in Sally's I picked up some Coconut CoWashSo Much Moisture, Curl & Coil Definer Jelly, and Curl Clarity Shampoo.  All of these items are by As I Am.  During the week I was adding so many different products and too much of the products to my hair that I needed to do a co-wash in the middle of the week.  I tell you, when you know better, you'll do better.  But hey, at that time I was learning so thank God for growth.  Co-washing was easy for me to do in the shower in the middle of the week and their co-wash was pretty dope.  It was enough slip to detangle my hair with my fingers and it actually cleansed my hair.  It also left my hair very moisturized.  After that I would use the So Much Moisture and Curl & Coil Definer Jelly to do a flexi rod set because this was still all I knew how to do at the time.  I tried a twist out every now and then.  Yea,  it was a complete fail EVERY SINGLE TIME.  I no longer use these products but knowing what I know now they would all make a bomb ass twist or braid out.  Oh I forgot to mention the Curl Clarity Shampoo.  I would use it every two weeks or so just to give my hair that squeaky clean feeling and avoid so much product build up.

Note that I have yet to mention a leave-in conditioner, deep conditioner, daily moisturizer, or any kind of hair oil.  Again, when you know better, you'll do better.  I was truly a work in progress.

During a random trip to Wal-Mart I picked up some Cantu products.  I got the Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioning Repair Cream and Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Conditioning Creamy Hair Lotion.  I actually liked these products at the time.  They helped to keep my hair moisturized and made it easy to detangle my hair.  I used them for awhile and one day I just stopped after I used the last bit of what I had.  Like always, I stopped using one product and moved right on to something else.

I read a lot about Miss Jessie's products.  All the reviews I read raved about these products.  There was always on.e major complaint--it costs too damn much.  In life I've learned that people will spend money on what they want to.  I love spending money on clothes, sneakers, purses, and...hair products.  DUH!  What I learned early in this natural hair game is that you have to invest in your products and your hair.  Cheaper products work for some but they don't work for us all.  Okay enough with that rant.  So I went to Walgreen's one day after work and got the Super Sweetback TreatmentPillow Soft CurlsJelly Soft CurlsCurly Pudding, and the Baby ButterCreme.  I spent like a cool $120 on these products alone.  They were so well worth the investment!  I would wash with the Carol's Daughters shampoo and conditioner and then I would use the Super Sweetback Treatment for my deep conditioner.  Finally I figured out I needed to deep condition my hair because that winter weather in Iowa was pure hell!  No seriously, it was.  It was brutally cold.  I'm talking about some days the high was -18 degrees and snow everywhere.  And guess what?  I still had to go to work in that shit!  Meanwhile, my friends that lived in Atlanta were bragging about the city shutting down because of a threat of snow.  Really, bruh?  A threat?!  Sorry, I got off track.  My point is that cold weather can and will make your hair extra dry.  At that time I didn't know why exactly; I just knew that it did.  After washing out the deep conditioner, I would add a little of the Baby ButterCreme and then use the Pillow Soft Curls, Jelly Soft Curls, or the Curly Pudding to do my flexi rod set.  Yes, I was still doing flexi rod sets.  I know you're tired of reading about them just like I was tired of wearing them.  But the good thing is I learned to put my hair in a mohawk or a curly puff.  Those styles worked best for me with flexi rod sets that were a few days old.

I continued using Miss Jessie's products up until I found out I was pregnant.  I stopped because the smell of each product made me pure gag.  I mean gag to the point that I would throw up if I didn't close the jar or the lid fast enough.  That was quite disappointing because I actually liked those products and the way they made my hair feel.  My flexi rod sets even lasted for more than two or three days.  But I had to give it all up and embark on a new hair product journey.
